R U OK DAY

As social media would have let you know, today, the 11th September is "R U OK" day.

This is an absolutely amazing initiative that was started in 09' to open up a conversation, that could potentially save lives. It may sound crazy or even silly that just asking someone how they are may change their life, but it's absolutely true, and has had some remarkable outcomes.

For many, sitting alone and being so deep and lost within their own dark thoughts, can easily create depression and anxiety which can make someone feel so alone that they feel there is no other way than to end their own life. There is not really a sadder thought is there, knowing that people can feel so alone that they no longer want to be on this earth.

So how does 11th September try to change this, or better this?

Well, it takes one moment, a second, to start up a conversation with someone to ask 'R U OK' ?
This sole question, allows someone, who may have been feeling so alone, an opportunity to answer  your question and open up about about the potential problems they are facing or the emotions that they are feeling.

If nobody asks, then nobody will know .
Sometimes just knowing that somebody cares is enough to alleviate the pangs of loneliness or helplessness that someone has been feeling.

In a 12 month period, it is estimated that 65, 000 Australians attempt suicide with and average of 2.320 people suiciding every year.
In fact around 45 % of Australians will experience mental illness in their lifetime while 20 % are affected each year

These statistics are out of control and it's devastating when this happens to somebody you know.

My family lost a very close family member last year from suicide, and the absolute pain that that leaves behind for every single person is astronomical. You don't see it coming and you don't know what to do once it does.
You are always left wondering why? What could I have done? Why didn't I ask more often if they were OK? Could we have saved them ? - the list goes on

The thing is, we will never know, but what we can do it rally together to make a difference. Talk. Start a conversation and if someone seems down, or in a differernt mood, just open your mouth and ask

" R U OK? "

Listen back and you never know, you may learn something, create a stronger bond, help someone or even potentially save a life.

It's not that hard, it takes a moment out of your day so now I ask you - all my readers

How are you ?

R U OK??

Now get out there and do the same.
Call a friend or a family member and just check in.

You never know who may be needing that call .
